Papagena Concert in Oxford. Saturday 11 September.

In 2019, John wrote a setting of ‘Stabat Mater Speciosa’, a 15th-Century hymn which is a joyful and passionate meditation on the Nativity. The new piece was written for Papagena, a brilliant quintet of singers who are championing the repertoire of works for female voices as well as adding to it through a series of commissions such as this. John’s new work will be premiered at the church of St Mary Magdalen, Oxford on 11 September, 2021 as part of a programme of ‘Stabat Mater’ settings alongside ‘musical reflections on contemporary themes of waiting, motherhood and love’.
