Memento mei

John has composed an exciting new piece for the Musica Deo Sacra Festival of Liturgical Music, which takes place at Tewkesbury Abbey from Monday 31 July to Sunday 6 August 2023.

‘I’ve just sent the score to festival director, Carleton Etherington, who commissioned me to compose a motet in memory of Tom Day, a singer and organist who sang with the festival choir. I didn’t know Tom, but he was a fellow musician and I chanced upon a text from the liturgy for the dead, the Officium Defunctorum, which is a prayer to the fragility of our short lives. My new piece is a musical conversation between different voices in the choir, and between the choir and organ, which invokes the spirit and memory of Tom Day.’

The new piece, Memento mei, will be sung at matins in Tewkesbury Abbey, 11am, Saturday 6 August
